Statue of Minerva crowning the arch of the Minerva Stairs at the University of Coimbra

Why Escadas de Minerva

Around 1724, the stairway linking the street to the Paço das Escolas at the University of Coimbra was rebuilt. Crowning its arch, the statue of Minerva, goddess of wisdom, offers knowledge to all who seek it.

At the foot of the statue, carved in stone, are the words Sapientia ædificavit: wisdom has built.

Climbing the stairs takes effort: an image of every student’s dedication. Our name pays tribute to that tradition.
